ABOUT
Perhaps the most well-known of the oldest landmarks in the city, the 'Gateway of India' is synonymous with the name, Mumbai. Built for commemorating King George V’s visit to India in 1911, this spectacular arch in basalt also symbolised the might of British triumph in India and could be completed only by 1924. Ironically, it also became a symbol of British downfall as the last British regiment marched out through this very same spot. The architecture of this structure is modelled on the Islamic style, which dominated Gujarat’s landscape in the 16th century. A mute witness to rich chunks of Mumbai history, the Gateway of India stoically stands at Apollo Bunder and seems to watch over the Mumbai Harbour.

Today, the Gateway of India is an inseparable part of the itinerary of most travellers. Countless locals also gather here to spend the evenings with their families. The place is a hive of activity and crawls with tourists, fast food stall vendors, photographers, touts, joyride stalls, and almost every other species of humanity. It is also used as the base for boarding ferries to Mandwa and Elephanta Island. Overall, the Gateway of India is probably the place where the pulse of Mumbai beats at its hardest. So, if you want to blend in some local flavour with history, ‘Gateway of India’ is the place to be. It is also the first thing you see if you catch a boat to Mumbai and the last thing you see when your flight departs from Mumbai.
