Hotwire's mission is to offer unbeatable low prices on airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, vacation packages and cruises. Through their partnerships with leading travel companies, they claim to guarantee the absolute lowest prices that one can get and book anywhere online.
Their relationships with leading hotel companies let you save a great deal off your hotel stay. In fact, they guarantee that if a lower price is found anywhere they are ready to pay double the difference. They strive to ensure quality and these savings doesn't mean that one misses out on the quality. Some of their partners include Hyatt, Marriott, and Holiday Inn. In addition to the discount airfares they offer exclusively from their airline suppliers, Hotwire also shows you the lowest price available from a wide range of airlines. Showing you these regular airfares lets you compare their discounts so that one can make the right flight choice for their trip. They also publish how much discount they offer, so that one can get a transparent view of their prices.
Hotwire was launched in 2000 by travel veterans Eric Grosse, Karl Peterson, Gregg Brockway, and Spencer Rascoff and by six major airlines: American, Northwest, Continental, America West (now US Airways), and United. Hotwire's first launched with opaque airline tickets. They started selling opaque hotel and rental cars a few months later. Package offerings started in 2003. In 2004, Hotwire began to offer select retail travel products. In June 2007, Hotwire removed all airfare booking fees. When hotel rooms, airline seats, or rental cars go unsold, travel companies use Hotwire to fill them. Hotwire does not identify the participating companies until after the purchaser has paid so as not to directly compete with regular retail sales of the travel partners. This sales model is known as "opaque." According to the Hotwire web site, they deal with brand-name travel companies exclusively. This is so Hotwire partners can clear out their supply and sell inventory that would otherwise go unsold. Hotwire reveals the prices and the travel dates of all their products upfront and does not sell via a 'bidding' or 'auction' model.
