"Hajo, near Guwahati is a important religious center for three religions Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. The age old harmonious confluence of these traditions can still be seen at this place today. The Hayagriva Madhava Temple that is located on the hill called Manikuta has a unique story to it. It is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Visnhu's avatar of Hayagriva (Vishnu with the head of a horse). One school of Buddhist also considers this temple to contain a relic of Lord Buddha. They say that this is the spot where Gautama Buddha attained Nirvana. Numerous people of Bhutia community congregate at the shrine during winters.
The Madan Kamdev temple is another important temple in Hajo. It is an important archaeological site that dates back to the 10th-12th century. Being a temple devoted to Kamdev it has close resemblance with the temples at Khajuraho.
Apart from the temples there is a very sacred shrine for the Islam community, the Powa Mecca. According to the inscriptions it is said that the walls of this mosque has the foundation of one gram of soil brought from the holy Mecca. It stands atop Garurachal Hill in Hajo and has the tomb of Pir Giasuddin Auliya who is said to have brought the soil from the holy town. He is also a pioneer of the religion in the state of Assam. During the reign of the Mughals, Sujauddin Mohammed Shah built this mosque in 1657 AD. "
