One day trip to Kohlapur can cover a lot! The history of Kolhapur goes back to many centuries. Its name has been mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita and has been the seat of the Chhatrapati Marathas. For a one day trip in Kolhapur, you can cover the major attractions in the following way.

Get an early start to your morning at the Mahalaxmi Temple which is one of the holy Shaktipeeths. Goddess Laxmi and Lord Vishnu are believed to reside in this temple, which is why this is one of the very powerful and sacred place for Hindus. The historical Bhavani Mandap is located within walking distance of the Mahalaxmi temple. It houses a temple for the Goddess Tulja Bhavani, the sister of Goddess Mahalaxmi. This place is also well known for its architectural style pertaining to the British Raj period. You can have your breakfast at the Hindustan Bakery located nearby.

Another closeby attraction is the Rankala Lake. You can enjoy a nice lakeside walk around the lake. There are many vendors within the lake gardens who sell snacks like Bhel Puri, Ragda Patis, roasted corns. Boating and Horse riding facilities are available here. The Shalini Palace is located on the western banks of the lake. It boasts of splendid architecture with abundant use of black stone, Italian marble and stained glass arches. The palace is currently converted to a hotel.

Your next stop can be the New Palace which houses the Shree Chhatrapati Shahu Museum. Built with polished black stone, this is an excellent architectural specimen. It has well laid out gardens, fountains, clock tower, zoo and a lake within the premises. The museum contains the memorabilia of the royal Chattrapati Marathas and provides information of the royal lifestyle enjoyed here. This is a must visit for those who love visiting historical sites.

The station road is around 2 km from the palace, and has a number of eateries out there. Have an early lunch and then head towards Panhala fort, or go to the fort directly and have your lunch there. The fort is around 20 km from the New Palace, and should not take you more than 40 minutes to reach there. Being the seat of the Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur, this fort was one of the most important forts in the Maratha story. Sajja Kothi, Amberkhana, Ambabai Temple are some of the must visit spots within the fort. Keep aside around 3-4 hours for the fort.

In the evening you can indulge in some shopping. Kolhapur is famous for Kolhapur chappals, sarees and Kolhapuri Saaj Jewellery. Head over to Karekar jewellers In Rajarampuri for more options in antique jewellery. Also in Rajarampuri, lies the famous bakery called “The Oven” who were the pioneers of bakery goodies in the city. A must visit. It is located very close to the Kolhapur Church. Lately, they have also started a vegetarian restaurant called “Milano” (closed on Wednesdays) which serves Italian, Mexican, Thai & Chinese fares. You can opt to have your dinner here, or head to the many restaurants and hotels on the Station road (3 km away) for a good meal. Hotel Opal is recommended for both vegetarian and non vegetarian food and has a lovely garden setting.

If you are especially interested in the local food, Misal is pretty popular in Kolhapur. It is a spicy gravy served with the pav bread. As a head’s up, when I say spicy, I mean really spicy that comes from lots of red chilly. So, in case you wish to go for something milder, Lava Rocks Inn is your best bet. They serve authentic Greco-Lebanese, European, Mediterranean, American, Oriental and Asian cuisines with an ever increasing list.

This is the best you can do on your one day trip to Kolhapur, which would make the most of your short stay here. For more information, please check out the Kolhapur Travel Guide page.
