about archaeological museum

In a land simply strewn with ancient relics and stupendous remains of one of India's most glorious empires, it is only fitting that Archaeological Survey of India's first museum opened in Hampi. Beginning with the collection of sculptures and artefacts the Britishers had housed in the Elephant stables, the  Archaeological Museum was eventually shifted to its present day office in Kamalapuram.

A miniature replica of Hampi, the museum beautifully and succinctly captures the grandness of Hampi and its heritage. As you walk in you will be greeted by Krishnadevaraya and his queens, in their life-like ceramic forms. Enclosing a detailed model of Hampi's layout are a total of four galleries.

While the first gallery has sculptures of various deities that were revered in Hampi, the second gallery displays armoury, metal objects of religious and utilitarian value as well as the gold and silver coins of different denominations that were in use during the Vijayanagara era. The fourth gallery has all the objects, statues, hero stones and other material that has been excavated over the years at Hampi including details of ongoing excavations.
