about archaeological museum

The Archaeological Museum of Khajuraho is an open air museum under the ASI. The museum was initially started by Mr. W.A. Jardine, a local British officer, in an attempt to preserve loosely kept sculptures and other significant remains. The museum is spread over a relatively large area in the main temple complex. Representing important Brahmanical, Buddhist and Jaina faiths, the five galleries are a delight to visit. The museum houses a plethora of beautiful and elegant artistic delights besides preserving the by glory of the bygone era.
Archaeological Museum of Khajuraho has over a hundred statues and panels of various sizes housed in four large halls, rather simplistically labelled ‘Vaishnava’, ‘Shaivite’, ‘Jaina’ and ‘Miscellaneous’. Among its special features are a sculpture of Vishnu making the gesture for silence; a statue of a four-legged Shiva; and Yamuna doorjambs. Head here for an enthralling experience.
