about vembanad backwaters

Pick between a houseboat, motor boat or just local transport and enjoy the calm Vembanad Backwaters like never before. There is no better way to spend your evening than by taking a fantastic ride here. The best way to explore the  backwaters is to hire a kettuvallom, the traditional rice boat-turned-houseboat. KTDC offers motorboat (INR 550 per hour), speedboat (INR 1,000 per hour) and pontoon boat (INR 1,500 per hour) rides. There are scores of private operators at the boat jetty at Vembanad Backwaters. Your resort will arrange cruises too. Take the waterways past paddy and coconut groves, along freshwater canals and rivers that debouch into Vembanad Lake. By the way, Pathiramanal Island, a 10-acre isle an hour’s ride from the bird sanctuary, is an ideal midway point for a backwater picnic.
