about badavilinga

Yet another monolithic marvel of Hampi is the 3 meter tall Shiva lingam. Housed inside a stone sanctum (chamber) with an open roof, the lingam with its base perpetually submerged in water is a lyrical depiction of the mythological lore of how River Ganges was brought to Earth from heaven.

Local folklore has it that a peasant woman, native to the region, commissioned the sculpting and installation of the lingam during the Vijayanagara reign and hence its name Badavilinga as Badava translates to 'poor' in local parlance. It is quite fascinating how the chamber remains flooded with water. An ancient water channel built when the shrine was established ensures that all times water is present inside the sanctum.
