22 km from Bangalore lies one of the richest biodiversity reserves of India, Bannerghatta zoo, a sprawling biological park having been created recently in 2002 out of Bannerghatta National Park.

Lush and wild, Bannerghatta’s green thickets are home to not just white tigers, bengal tigers, lions and elephants but also to a vast range of small mammals, birds of all sorts, slithery reptiles and lurking crocodiles. Needless to say, it is one of the best places to visit in Karnataka. Within the biological park, there is a zoo that encases a number of its wild residents, a designated bear and tiger safari zone, an incredible butterfly park and, surprisingly, trekking trails.

While the zoo works well to give you a glimpse of the animal kingdom but to truly experience the park’s biodiversity hop on the safari bus and head out for safari ride past skulking bears, roaring tigers and lions lazing around.

Be careful to not step out of your bus and heed the guide’s instructions. There have been incidents of tiger attacks when visitors in their zeal to get a closer look went far too close.

The way to explore the park is to head out on the safari once you get there.

Post the safari ride make your way to the Butterfly museum. Set within a three-domed structure, complete with a tropical climate and a five acre blooming garden is the butterfly trail where you can spot these flying jewels, fluttering away in complete joy. In addition to the trail there is a small museum and an audio-visual centre where you can get all the information on them. Be sure to visit the curio shop for a spot of souvenir shopping.

Be sure to visit the reptile zone and crocodile farm.

While there are food stalls within the zoo complex in addition to a children’s playing area, for a filling meal you can also visit Hill View Restaurant right outside the park where the lodges and hotels around Bannerghatta Zoo are situated.
