This place was named in the honor of Vardhamanswami or Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara in Jainism, as it is scripted that the saint spent some time here. Boasting of a multicultural heritage, and rich history that goes as far back as the 6th century, the town has number of temples and monuments which are reminiscent of Bengali Hindu and Mughal architecture respectively. The Curzon gate, Hawa Mahal and Golapbagh are a few of the popular tourist destinations.
Bardhaman is very busy place as it is juction of to Railways of Howrah and Shealdah. Bardhaman is also boast with short temples. A special type of sweet named "langcha" of Bardhaman is very famous.
