Get your hands on the best things to buy in Manali on your next vacation there. Though the hill station is a not exactly a shopper’s paradise, it offers quite a few interesting options. Here are some things you must buy:

Tibetan and Himalayan Handicrafts

From intricately carved furniture and incense to the ever so intriguing singing bowl, the shops in Manali have it all on offer. Pick from a wide selection of Tibetan handicrafts and take back home a piece of the Himalayas. Tibet Art Collections is the ideal place to visit for such artifacts.

Woollen Clothing

Whether you are looking for sweaters, cardigans or warm wool caps and mufflers, Manali is a heaven for woolen shopping, especially if you are visiting during the winters. Pay a visit to the Manu Market and you are bound to leave with a bagful of smart woollens.

Kinnauri and Kullu Shawls

Kullu shawls are available in extremely beautiful and flamboyant colors and patterns. Just as the names suggest, these shawls originate from Kullu and Kinnaur. The designs on Kinnauri shawls hold a religious significance as the range of colors used in various patterns symbolize the religious and mythological history of the region. These shawls are undoubtedly among the best things to buy in Manali.

Prayers Wheels

It is an exclusive Tibetan praying instrument that always bears the chant "Om Mani Padme Hum". It is a cylindrical object that turn on an axle with a long handle. A slight rotation of the wrist turns the wheel around. Inside this cylinder, written on paper or skin, are esoteric Buddhist mantras. It is believed that praying is done automatically if one sets the wheel in motion. They make beautiful gifts and souvenirs.

Kullu Caps

Generally made out of pure wool, Kullu caps are very warm and protect your head from the severe cold of the mountains. One of the very prominent products of Manali handlooms, Kullu caps are known for their beautiful blend of attractive colors and fine quality (though traditionally the caps are coloured green). You can pick one up from numerous shops on the Mall Road.

Thangkas

Thangkas are paintings made on cotton, or silk appliqué cloth, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, or a spiritual scene. Generally, thangkas last a very long time and retain much of their lustre, but due to their delicate nature, they have to be kept in dry places where moisture will not affect the quality of the silk. They are commonly called a scroll-painting.

Dorjes

Dorjes are weapon-like structures which are used as a ritual object to symbolize both the properties of a diamond and a thunderbolt. They are essentially a type of club with a ribbed spherical head. They make beautiful show pieces or gift items. You can pick one up while shopping at Old Manali.

Apart from this list of the best things to buy in Manali, you can also pick up bamboo souvenirs, turquoise and silver jewellery, Buddhist paintings, nameplates and keychains which can be customized to one’s own taste. In addition, there are apples (of course), dozens of fruit products, fresh fruit jams, pickles and jellies to take back home and relish.
