The Legends

Bhangarh Fort is mostly all about the legends that surround it, with two of them being very popular.

- The Story of Princess Ratnavati and Singhia

Known for her beauty and elegance, Ratnavati, the princess of Bhangarh started getting many matrimonial offers by the time she turned 18. A black magician, Singhia too wanted her hand in matrimony. He cast a spell on the princess’ oil, which on being used would lure her towards him. The princess found out about the spell and poured the oil on a rock, which went and hit the magician. With his dying words, the magician cursed the city with death and the end of rebirths.

- The Curse of Guru Balu Nath

It is believed that the place was cursed by a magician who had sanctioned the construction of the town on one condition, "The moment the shadows of your palaces touch me, the city shall be no more!" In ignorance, a descendant prince raised the palace to a height such that the shadow reached the forbidden place, thereby leading to the devastation of the entire town. According to local villagers, whenever a house is built there, its roof collapses.
