about brabourne road

Situated midway between the ‘White Town’ and ‘native’ Kolkata, Brabourne Road was once the place for commerce. The foreign communities who came to make a living in Calcutta — Chinese, Jews, Armenians — all settled here. Many of the cuisines that are now a staple part of local diet were first sold here: stir-fries, sou-meis, rolls, biryani. Brabourne Road is an urban jungle but you can see an amazing number of religious structures within a short radius.

The most conspicuous of these is the Portuguese Church, the first Catholic church of Kolkata. Built in 1747, its two towers have cinematic grandeur. The interiors exude old-world charm. Across the road stands the Maghen David Synagogue (1884). The red brick building has exquisite Venetian windows. Some distance away is Armenian Street. The Armenians, now numbering just a few hundred, were the first foreigners to settle in Bengal in the 15th century, and were bankers in the Nawab’s court. The Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth was built in 1707; the present structure dates from 1724.
