about brahmaputra valley

The Brahmaputra Valley in Assam was the first region in India where modern tea production started. Though the tea plant is indigenous to this region and was used by some tribes, its large-scale production started only after the British East India Company lost its monopoly of trading tea from China in the 1830s and began looking for alternative sources. Soon plantations proliferated in Assam, rapidly followed by the Nilgiri Hills, Darjeeling Hills, the Dooars and Kangra Valley. Ever since, India has been a leading producer of tea in the world; today there are thousands of tea plantations in India.
