about britannia and company

Fresh Lime Soda, sweet, to beat the Bombay heat! is a line you will not fail to hear from 90-year-young owner Boman Kohinoor. This line, used on unsuspecting lunchers never fails to charm them and is often followed with stories on famous visitors to Britannia. Lunch time sees a long waiting, and everyone actually waits for a taste of the soft Bombil Fry, Iranian Berry Pulao, and delicious Sali Boti! This 90-year-old spartan, non-airconditioned Irani eatery is set amidst the beautiful stone buildings of Ballard Estate. It's also a must visit for its peeling walls, simple table-and-chair decor weave a charm of their own. This high-ceilinged cafe once actually had a live rooster on its owner's desk. Now his garlanded photo hangs on a wall. Afshin Kohinoor, son of Boman, is also always here. Of course, what's really well-known and well-loved (justifiably) is their signature Iranian Berry Pulao (available in three variants\: mutton, chicken, vegetable) generously flavoured with onion and tomato. The Patra ni Machhi is fresh and unerringly steamed in chutney, the Mutton Cutlet Gravy is good, as is the Golden-fried Bombil and Sali Mutton. Sadly, the Parsi Dhansak can do with a lot of improvement. Outstanding Caramel Custard. It gets warm in this high-ceilinged restaurant, rosy Raspberry or even a spicy Ginger Soda and take in the charm all around. How we wish they were open for dinner and on Sundays as well!
