about cafe bay leaf

-By Karen AnandDECORA huge all day dining space on the ground floor of the newly opened Holiday Inn conveniently located (technically in Hinjewadi) on the main Pune-Bangalore highway on the way to the Mumbai expressway. I was actually quite shocked to see the size of this place and moreover to see it packed on a weekday at lunchtime. I thought that maybe there was an in-house conference which would explain the crowd but was told that these were just walk-ins from the neighbouring IT offices! There must have been about a hundred people there and even though most people chose the buffet, there were no queues or crowding which I often find puts me off buffets completely. Counters were well spread out to take care of the numbers and still look appealing and service with replenishments was quite swift and efficient. Areas are clearly demarcated with a central salad island\: all non-vegetarian dishes are on one side of the main course counter and vegetarian on the other which is quite considerate to the vegetarian customer and a good move in the 5 star brigade.FOODThe variety and buffet spread at Cafe Bay Leaf is pretty lavish by any standards. They also have a very extensive a la carte menu. Indian on the buffet reigns supreme. Menus change daily, but the day I was there, both the veg and non-veg starters were outstanding - a dry Malwan type chicken, a five-spice fish and aloo tikkis. I was particularly impressed with the vegetarian main courses - palak mangodi (moong wadi), a home style gobi and a couple of Italian and Oriental options. The Indian desserts - all made in house- were all excellent. The continental desserts tend to be more in the pastry category and not overly inspired. We also ordered a couple of dishes from the a la carte menu - the charmoula spiced prawns and New Zealand lamb chops - recommendations from one of the chefs. Both were pretty good but quit steep in terms of price. I would urge you to try the Konkan specialties on the menu, specially the chicken cafreal.PLUS \& MINUSBoth the quality and the presentation of the food, is quite 5 star. Western desserts and patisserie needs improvement.MUST TRY DISHES Dal tadka, railway mutton curry, five spice fish
