about chamundi hill

Climbing the Chamundi Hill is quite a popular activity among the locals to stay fit. But tourists may find a lot many hidden treasures on this hill. To begin with, the main attraction is the Chamundi Devi Temple, named after the Goddess Chamundi Devi (another name of Godess Durga) who killed the demon-king Mahishasura, in a vicious battle. In fact, the whole hill is named after the Goddess, so as to honour her and her victory. The rulers of Mysore patronised this temple and considered Chamundi Devi as their protector and guide.

The temple was built in 12th Century and is a shining example of Dravidian architecture. A major tourist attraction, the temple is 7 storeys tall with intricate carvings. It is said that the statue is made of pure gold and the temple doors made of silver. You would have to climb 1,008 steps to reach the main temple. After climbing around 800 steps, you will come across a huge black granite Nandi bull statue, which is a short distance away from a Shiva temple present in the vicinity.
