about chap chay

Lemon Grass had its time in the sun. The restaurant that once lived at The Raintree on St. Mary's Road closed in March and six months later, Chap Chay - pronounced Chap Chai - meaning mixed vegetables, was born. The old-new and freshly refurbished restaurant offers Asian cuisine and boasts of Chennai's first do-it-yourself stir fry station. You could opt to feel like professional chefs as you mix the goodness of fresh veggies with noodles and sauces just the way they should be, or you could go the conventional way and eat what the extensive menu offers. One word to describe the décor at Chap Chay would be 'classy'. It is contemporary, minimalist and thematically Asian. Hand painted and heavy custom made cutlery complements the earthy brown stone wear created especially for Chap Chay. Black and red, including in the uniforms make the whole atmosphere vibrant, lively and inviting. Prawn Suimai is an excellent open steamed dumpling option, while vegetarians could go for the Crumbed Corn Mousse Cake, and tiny, perfectly steamed dim sums with spinach and corn stuffing. Anything crumb fried is called Katsu in Japanese, and Chap Chay serves excellent Squid Katsu. For the calorie counters, the steamed Hainan Chicken is an absolute infusion of flavours with its wolf berry and dried lily flowers. The Thai vegetarian green curry would be perfect with baked jasmine rice, or you could opt for the sesame soya, which was a little different. For dessert, go with the Five Spiced Chocolate Mousse Cake and Fried Ice Cream which are the winners, while Green Tea Tiramisu is an Asian take on the original.
