about chhatrapati shivaji terminus

Bustling with people and seamlessly connecting you to Mumbai, that is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). Also known as Victoria Terminus, it welcomes you with a grand and splendid Victorian Gothic architecture, which is surely going to cast a spell on you. Hailed as UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, CST is one of the busiest railway stations in Asia.  Going back to its history, the place was designed by Frederick Stevens and the construction was completed in the year 1887. However, the terminus was functional even before it was completely built as the first train that left this place was during 1853.

Officially renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1998, it is still popularly known as VT (Victoria Terminus). The moment you step in at CST, you will notice that the structure is a unique and interesting blend of Hindu, Islamic and Victorian styles, which is represented through its turrets, stained-glass windows, spires and buttresses. Don’t miss the jungle themed facade which is adorned with gargoyles, lions and peacocks.

When we talk about its functionality, the main railway station Chhatrapati Shivaji Station caters to trains plying within the city and outside. The Central line serves Southern India, Eastern India and some parts of North India whereas the Western line connects to the Western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The intricate network of trains makes it extremely convenient to travel to this charming city. CST was built in 1887 to honour Queen Victoria ( it was a part of her Golden Jubilee celebration). It is also the head office of central railways in India.
