about chichen-itza

Chichen Itza was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, after a worldwide voting via the internet. Chichen Itza was a large Pre-Columbian city built by the Maya civilization.UNESCO has considered the archaeological city as a World Heritage Site since 1988. These titles are well deserved by Chichen Itza, since it is only through the understanding of the rituals held there and the engravings on buildings throughout the city that we can fully comprehend the ancient wisdom of the Mayans, some of which is still relevant today!

Why was it built?

The chichen itza was built to provide a living calendar that would represent the Mayan civilization. The 4 sides of chichen itza contain 365 steps (depicting the solar year), 52 panels (for each year in the Mayan century as well as each week in the solar year) and 18 terraces (for the 18 months in the religious year).Inside, the Castillo is an interesting temple accessible up a narrow stairway.

Interesting Facts

  • The Maya's developed the only writing system of all the civilizations of America prior to the conquest. It is believed that it was an important pilgrimage place for the Mayas. All the buildings at Chichen Itza are made out of stone.A visitor is not allowed to climb the stairs of the Castillo anymore in order to better preserve the monument.

  • During the fall and spring equinoxes, the sun's shadow forms an enormous snake's body, which lines up with the carved stone snake head at the bottom of the Castillo pyramid.
