about chingari

DecorA long overdue visit to Chingari, on the rooftop of Le Meridien. Chingari is much the same as it was 13 years ago when it opened with solid wood and wrought iron / cane furniture and a beautiful evening ambience by the pool with discreet lighting and candles on every table. Chingari has still retained its charm and elegance and I have to say the quality of food too. Still a little oasis of calm in the centre of the city.FoodThe food is broadly speaking North Indian with some distinctive Lucknowi changes and changes which are I must say, for the better. Chef Gulam Qureshi has been at Chingari for almost 10 years but he has finally come out of the closet as far as his Lucknowi and Awadhi secrets go. Start with the amazingly melt in the mouth galouti kebab and the inimitable raan which they say serves two but it is enough meat for four! The lamb is absolutely lean with no ugly fat nor overpowering masalas. It is almost European in appearance and the spices are gentle and flavoursome which bring out the real taste of home grown mutton. We tried many kebabs, but if truth be told, I would just have these two dishes with a bowl of their delicious garlicky raita and some baby whole wheat naans. Yes, if you must, the kaali daal too which is truly outstanding. You really need no more. However, if you are curious, then do try the gosht dum biryani, more fragrant than fire and brimstone and the miloni tarkari, a delicious vegetable dish with methi and yoghurt and the fish Amritsari, boneless fillets of pomfret in the familiar but very gentle ajwain based red spice paste. Do not miss dessert. Chef Qureshi excels himself with a mouthwateringly rich zafraani phirni and chenna malpua with rabri. It is not easy to find good traditional Indian food anywhere nowadays. Chingari is a sure shot bet.Plus \& MinusThe ambience is quite magnificent and a lovely gentle way to end a humdrum day.Must TryRaan-e- Chingari, Galouti Kebab
