about churchill war rooms

These underground rooms at Churchill War Rooms, set almost like a maze, is where history was written in the August of 1945. Nucleus of all the British efforts during World War II, where all the strategies were planned and laid out, espionage were plotted and secrets buried. The rooms are not reconstructed but rather when the war was won by the Allies, Winston Churchill and his advisory team left them exactly the way they were and they were preserved by the IWM group, freezing this monumental moment in time.

As you walk in, you first enter the War Cabinet Room at Churchill War Rooms, where Churchill and his close circle conspired for the war. The Map room was the information nerve center and when the war officially came to an end with the defeat of Japan on 15th August, 1945, lights were switched off and the room deserted, leaving everything as it is, including the color coded telephones, war maps covering the walls and the multitude of tiny pinholes dotting them, charting the Allied ships' progress over the Convoy map.
Next to the Map room is Churchill's office cum bedroom from where he made historic wartime speeches including the one on 11th September, 1940 when he warned against Hitler's plan to wage a war against Britain.
You will be given a free audio guide that not only gives a detailed account of the rooms but also carries sound effects of air sirens and Churchill's radio broadcasts.
