about dakhinpat satra

Dakhinpat Satra is one of the most unique places where the Vaishnavite traditions are still preserved in its purest form. Located on the enchanting river island, Majuli, of the mighty Brahmaputra, this Satra was established in the year 1584 by Satradhikar Sri Vanamalidev. The satra was supported by the then Ahom king Jayadhvaj Singh and it was built with ornamented entrance and decorated with many designs. Sculptures and paintings can also be seen in the satra and is an indication of the artistic skills of the people of the place. The Dakshinpat Satra is home to more than 90 celibate devotees who are known as bhakats. The satra comes alive with revelry and celebration during the Ras Leela festival and many rituals and performances are held during this time.
