about darbhanga

Known as the “Cultural Capital of Bihar”, Darbhanga is counted amongst the oldest cities of Bihar. The first mentions of the city go back to the times of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. As per the Vedic sources, the Videhas were believed to have migrated from the banks of River Saraswati in Punjab. They were guided east, along the modern day River Gandak, by Lord Agni. Once the settlements flourished, it gave rise to the kingdom of the Videhas -- the Selfless. Over the course of history, the Videhas came to be ruled by the Janaks. One Janak king, King Mithi became famous for his greatness. To commemorate this, the territory was named Mithila. King Janak Sirdhwaja, father of Sita, also ruled this empire with great wisdom.

In its long and interesting history, Darbhanga was ruled by Kshatriyas, the Afghans, and the British East India Company. Under the reign of Akbar, a Maithili Brahmin family came to rule, known as the Khandavala Dynasty. In the same period, Akbar planted a 100,000 mango trees in an area which is today known as Lakhi Bagh. The area came to be known as Darbhanga Raj and was one of the most prosperous and rich zamindari estates during the British Raj.

Darbhanga is a flourishing city with a cultural amalgamation that brings its roots to the core even in the changing times. The city is famous for its pilgrimage centres, belonging to different religions, cultures and periods in history. Ahilya Asthan is a temple dedicated to Ahalya, the woman who was cursed by her husband Gautam Rishi and had turned to stone. When Lord Ram’s feet touched that stone, it turned back to Ahalya. Every year, during Ramnavami, a great fair is organised here.
