In context of Hinduism, Navratri literally means ‘nine nights’ where the nine forms of Goddess Durga is celebrated. The differences between Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri are:

Chaitra Navratri is celebrated in March-April whereas Sharad Navratri is celebrated in September-October. The reason to celebrate Chaitra Navratri is to mark the beginning of the Hindu New Year. Sharad Navratri celebrates the slaying of demon Mahishasura by Goddess Durga.
