about dudhwa national park

A land of sal trees and vast grasslands. Through which run the rivers Suheli and Mohana as well as minor streams and rain-fed taals. The icing on the cake? No hotels, no guides, no cars, nothing much by way of infrastructure. As the official Forest Department pamphlet says, “We cannot promise you a home away from home. The jungle is the domain of nature and its wild denizens and we are just visitors to their home.”

In 1958, a sanctuary called Sonaripur, was formed in this area to protect the barasingha. A larger part of the area was declared the Dudhwa Sanctuary in 1968, a National Park in 1977 and brought under Project Tiger in 1988. The reserve now comprises 680 sq km of Dudhwa and 200 sq km of Kishanpur Sanctuary.

Dudhwa is also known for its association with conservationist Billy Arjan Singh (1917-2010), who lived in the area on a farm called Tiger Haven. He lobbied to have Dudhwa declared a sanctuary and fought all his life against poachers, woodcutters, officials... often personally patrolling the jungle in his youth. He bred leopards and a tigress to prove that animals born in captivity could be rehabilitated in the forest. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2006 and the J Paul Getty award (the ‘environmental Nobel’) in 2004.
