about dunedin botanic garden

The Dunedin Botanic Garden is divided into two parts-- upper gardens and lower gardens. It is one of New Zealand's oldest gardens and was established in 1863 at a different location. After the floods in 1868, the gardens were moved to their current site in 1869.

The lower gardens consist of the Winter Garden, rose and herb gardens, a heated glass house, children's playground, a duck pond, band rotunda, and Japanese garden. They also house many sculptures and statues, such as those by Cecil Thomas depicting Peter Pan and the Darling children from the novel Peter Pan. The upper gardens are divided by a winding public road. Along each side of this road are bush walks. The upper garden also consists of a geographic plant collection and native plant collection.
