The month of June is that time of the year when everyone is looking forward to a long vacation that offers only festivity and celebration on display. And when you talk about all this and more, what exactly you need is a well planned itinerary of some of the famous events and festivals celebrated in June across the world; So take your pick!

Hemis Festival:

One of the religious and famous festivals of Ladkah, is the Hemis Festival that observes the visitation of many locals as well as tourists in June. The festival falls on the tenth day of the Tibetan Lunar month and is covered as a two-day affair. It is usually celebrated at Hemis Gompa - one of the richest and biggest Buddhist Monasteries in Ladakh, where many artists and ‘lamas’ perform the Masked Dance, illustrating the triumph of good over evil. The outfits are quite impressive including brocade dresses and intensely tinted masks. Also, the resonance of cymbals, drums and trumpets further the spirit of the festival. It’s interesting to know that this festival also observes, celebrating the birth anniversary of the spiritual leader and founder of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism, Padmasambhava.

Urs of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti:

Urs (the death anniversary) of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti is considered to be the largest Muslim fair in India. It is held at the Dargah of Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti in Ajmer. Hundreds and thousands of pilgrims come here to offer prayers. This festival spans for six days and commences with the hoisting of a white flag by the representative on the tomb. From adorning the tomb at its best to reciting poetry and singing qawwalis, everything is observed as a part of the ceremony. Just outside the dargah, you will see ‘tabarukh’ (sweet rice garnished with condiments and dry fruits) being served. The foot of the dargah is lined with a busy ‘bazaar’, encapsulating embroidered rugs, flowers, prayer caps and decorative chadars - some of the famous souvenirs in Ajmer; also, the bazaar furthers the liveliness of the fair.

FIFA World Cup:

Known to be one of the famous international men’s football tournaments, FIFA World Cup 2014 is going to be the 20th FIFA World Cup, scheduled in Brazil. It was in 2007 that Brazil was elected as the host nation for the event. Apart from the host country, all World Champion teams including Italy, Germany, England and several others have qualified for the competition. It is expected that a total of 64 matches will be played in some of the famous cities in Brazil. For the first time, the tournament will make use of the goal-line technology or Goal Decision System - a method used to detect whether the ball has crossed the goal line or not. This event is going to be one big thing for avid football lovers.
