about ganesh bagh

Constructed during the early 19th century to serve as a royal summer retreat for the Peshwa king - Vinayak Rao, Ganesh Bagh is located in the suburbs of Karwi town, close to Sidhapur. Built to accommodate various pleasure and sporting facilities for the Peshwa ruler, Ganesh Bagh still enjoys the eminence accorded to it in the bygone era. As the name suggests, though there are well laid out gardens, the main attraction is the architectural splendour of the buildings present here. Referred to as the ‘Mini Khajuraho of India’, Ganesh Bagh boasts of a Shiva temple, the architecture of which is inspired from the temples of Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. The exquisite carvings of female forms, animals and flowers, accorded with obvious attention to detail, seem to put a life-like quality to them. The temple sees a major footfall during the holy month of Shravan in the Hindu calendar and during Mahashivratri. There is a 3 storied summer house called Avantika, which is the main attraction of Ganesh Bagh. Today, two stories of  this edifice remains immersed in the water, the second storey being visible only during the peak summer months. Another draw for the tourists is a seven storied well called Baoli, with a staircase leading down to the lower floor. Six storeys of this well remain flooded with water.
