about ganga aarti

Ganga Arti is perhaps the most famous spectacle at Haridwar. Wooing people from far and beyond, it's an everyday ritual followed at the riverside of Ganga, witnessed by lakhs of onlookers. It's a ritual in the honour of the river, with priests using huge brass and silver lamps. The leaping flames of fire catch the very fancy of the onlookers, most of them gathered on both the sides of the river for a dekko. During Ganga Arti the waters at this time of the evening come alive with millions of leafed lamps that are sent floating by devotees, sending a thousand sparkling shimmers down the river. Though it's considered as a very holy ritual, it's advised to stay away from it, for the contents used for the ritual pollute the river water. The best is to say a prayer or two and help keep the river clean to pay respect to it.

Reach Har Ki Pauri some 30 minutes before the aarti starts to get to the stairs that offer the best view of the ritual. The stairs right opposite the Brahma Kund and below the Clock Tower are two best points to get unobstructed view of the aarti.
