about gingee fort

Out exploring the environs of Chennai? A visit to the Gingee fort is a must. After all, how many times is it that you get to stand in a fort once described by Shivaji as the most impregnable fortress in India and was labelled by the British as the “Troy of East”. Built by the Cholas in the 13th century on the foundations laid down by the Kons in the 12th century, when you walk the passages of the Gingee fort you can hear the walls telling their own tale of its antiquity and the generations that have passed it by.

Having morphed from a small fort to the unbreachable fortress that it was during the reign of Shivaji, Gingee fort was where Shivaji's second son escaped to from the Mughals and it was good seven years before the Mughals were able to invade the fort and that too when Chatrapati Rajaram had already managed to escape.
Consisting of three hills and shielded by an 80 feet wide moat, Gingee Fort is replete with impressive fortifications, structures and legends.
