about gorippalayam dargah

Among the largest mosques in the city, this mosque is an architectural wonder, with a beautiful dome that is believed to have been made out of a single rock from the Alagar Hill. The mosque is believed to have been built during the reign of Thirumalai Nayak, as a gesture towards the welfare of his Muslim subjects.

The name of the mosque has roots in Persian, where "gor" means grave. Rightly so, the mosque houses the graves of the two reverred saints of Islam, Hazrat Sulthan Alauddin Badusha and azrat Sulthan Shamsuddin Badhusha, who came from Oman in the 13th Century and bought this land from the the-then ruler of Madurai, Kulasekra Kun Pandiyan. Thirumalai Nayak improved on this mosque and brought it to its current glory.
