about government museum

Originally founded by Sir F S Growse in the year 1874, the Government Museum (aka Archaeological Museum) at Mathura is one of the best in the country. With an excellent collection of sculptures belonging to the Mathura School of Art, the museum also houses several ancient coins, paintings and transcripts of the period between 3rd Century BCE and 12th Century CE, all found from archaeological excavations around the region. These artifacts offer some brilliant insights into the Gupta and Kushan kingdoms, most prominent in this region. Walk your way through a dazzling display of ornaments, terracotta sculptures and bronze objects and you’ll be surprised at the depth of the collection here.
