about great church (grossmunster)

Located next to the Limmat River in Zurich, this 12th century cathedral has both architectural and historical significance. It is dedicated to the martyrs Regula, Felix and Exuperantius, the patron saints of Zürich. Providing marvellous views of the city and other nearby churches, the Grossmunster's twin three-story towers quite modest in size, dominate the city of Zurich. And as you make your way to the top of the twin peaks, you can see all of Zurich - a spectacular view worth capturing.

While the exterior of the cathedral is very inspiring, including some wonderful Romanesque carvings of animal and plants, the modern statue of Heinrich Bullinger (successor of Zwingli) on the wall along with lovely bronze doors, depicting biblical scenes, the interior is quite bare, entirely stripped of paintings and statues denounced by Zwingli.

The beautiful stained-glass windows depict the Three Magi bearing gifts to the Virgin and Child, with angels above and have been done by Augusto Giacometti, the famous Swiss abstract artist. This place has a lot to offer with the cathedral's chapterhouse located right next to the Grossmünster on Zwingliplatz. This church is a "not to miss" place for all the enthusiastic voyagers.
