about gulbarga fort

The Gulbarga fort is the obvious place to start a historical journey; it looks strong, though desolate. Originally built by one Raja Gulchand and later fortified by Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah (1347-1358), it has 15 towers and 26 guns. A thick double wall with massive bastions encloses it. The fort is surrounded by a moat in which cowherds wash buffaloes and tonga-wallahs their carriages. Within the fort lies the massive citadel called Bala Hissar, hewn from black stone. It has semi-circular turrets on the sides and corners. Atop it is an old cannon that is nearly 25 ft long. The Jami Masjid, which resembles the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain, is an elegant structure with wide arches. Built in 1367, it’s one of the earliest mosques in South India. North of the fort is the 14th-century Shah Bazaar Mosque and the 15th-century Dargah of Sheik Siraj-ud-din Junaidi, the religious teacher of Alauddin Shah Bahmani.
