about gulbarga

Founded by the Bahmani Sultans in the 14th century, the city of Gulbarga, recently renamed as Kalburgi (land of stones) has witnessed the twists and turns of history, just like the markings of a typical Indian city. Having its name derived from the Persian language, where ‘Gul’ stands for rose and ‘Barga’ for leaf, and constructed in the shape of “Roseleaf”, this place justifies itself as a land of lavish living.

Gulbarga’s old fort has a number of interesting buildings, imposing tombs of Bahmani Kings and around 15 towers that are inspired from the Islamic architecture. Those of you who have an eye for detail will learn that the architecture of the Jama Masjid reflects the same style as the one followed in the great mosque in Cordoba, Spain. Chor Gumbad is one of the most prominent attractions of this city. It is built atop the hill and is located on the west side of Gulbarga Fort. This victory monument is a beautiful piece of architecture and must be visited.

Devotees and Tourists can visit places of worship including the Sharana Basaveshwara Temple and Hazrat Khwaja Bande Nawaz Mausoleum (where marbles are known for the poetry they do). And, once done with all the sightseeing, they can enjoy the sweet and spicy yummylicious local snacks like Malpuri, Jolada Rotti, Tahari and Hoorana Holige.

This city witnesses a dry climate with temperatures ranging from 8 to 45 degree celsius. From late February to mid June are the summer months in the region. The best time to visit this city can be the months of October and November, when the weather is pleasant.
