Guntur’s name is derived from two Telugu words -- Gunta which means Reservoir and Ooru which means settlement. So basically, Guntur is a town that has many reservoirs and water tanks. A stunning city located near the coast, Guntur boasts of some brilliant historical monuments like Amravati Caves, Kondavid Fort, Nagarjunakonda and many more.  The city’s history goes back to 922 CE, during the reign of Ammaraja I. This is where French astronomer Pierre Janssen discovered helium. The city landed on the national and international map when the Europeans arrived. Soon, the French shifted their capital to Guntur from Kondavid Fort in 1752. Guntur is not just a historically rich town; it’s economy is bustling and it is the largest producer of chilies in the country. This city is also one of the largest learning centres of the country, housing Acharya Nagarjuna University, which is one of the largest universities in India. The monuments and the centres of learning attract a number of tourists each year. Being a historic city, with linkages to ancient Buddhism, Guntur is a must visit for any history buff and adventure lover.

The city boasts of a diverse and colourful culture. There is a thriving Israeli community named Bene Ephraim in Guntur with a Jewish synagogue. One cannot the buzzing cultural vibe in Guntur as all communities and festivals are celebrated with equal enthusiasm here. Some of the must-visit attractions in Guntur include Kondaveedu Fort, Jinnah Tower and Manasa Sarovar.
