about hanuman dhara

It is believed that the holy journey of Chitrakoot is incomplete without paying a visit to Hanuman Dhara. To reach the main temple, one has to climb 360 stairs. The temple itself is carved out of a mountain, and is dedicated to Hanuman. The idol of Hanuman is a rare 5 headed one. A narrow stream of water emerges from the rock crevice and falls directly on the idol. Apart from that, there is a nearby well that never dries up, which is also considered sacred. The temple gets its name due to a mythological legend associated with this natural spring, which is briefly elaborated below. After Hanuman had set fire to the entire kingdom of Lanka with his tail, his whole body was consumed in flames and he was burning in pain. Lord Rama asked him to stand under the above mentioned natural spring to cool his body. Since, then this spring is known as Hanuman Dhara. Views from the top of this temple is spectacular, with beautiful panoramic vistas of the Chitrakoot town.
