about harajuku

DecorIn need of some interesting sustenance at lunch we popped into the cool surroundings of Harajuku at the O hotel. I am still shocked at how empty this place is especially at lunch given the superlative quality of the food and I am happy to say that unannounced, unprepared and incognito, lunch was as marvelous as it was on previous visits, which is a great testament to the consistency to the food and service. Harajuku is Pune's one and only Japanese restaurant. It is elegant with stark red chandeliers and walls and red flock upholstered chairs. It has been well maintained (no peeling wallpaper or unpolished chairs) and looks startlingly just like it did when it first opened. Despite the fact that the food is of outstanding quality, 'Japanese' doesn't seem to have sky rocketed in this city. Clearly this is a reflection of perhaps slightly higher prices compared with other options in the city.FoodThe menu has not changed since the restaurant opened. It covers the whole gamut of popular Japanese cuisine from sashimi to all the sushis - hand rolled, temaki rolls, nigiri, gunkan, maki rolls and something exclusive to Harajuku 'special rolls' where the seaweed and seafood are on the inside, often made scrumptious by adding mayonnaise or Japanese spice or both. At lunch they have a variety of bento boxes (Japanese version of the Indian thali) which are both filling and a great way to enjoy Japanese food without taking out a bank loan. It is also reasonably quick. By the time you gulp down a refreshing glass of Mulshi water and proceed on to your green tea, the lovely lacquer bento box arrives with clear compartments for the salad, delicious glazed salmon, tempura, six sushi and a dessert. There are several bento box options including vegetarian ones. My son has the teppanyaki tenderloin (made all the more scrumptious with a generous knob of butter) with chunky mushrooms which arrives at the same time despite the fact that it is not a lunch special. The variety of sushi and sashimi on the menu is staggering. For those who prefer something cooked, the teppanyaki and teriyaki are excellent and the deep fried tempura, crisp and completely dry as it should be is as near to perfection as you will find. Harajuku serves a superlative chawan mushi, a savoury steamed egg custard with sea food and prawn. It is a difficult dish to get right and along with tempura, sushi and sashimi, is really the acid test for a good Japanese restaurant.Plus \& MinusConsistently good Japanese food.Must TryAny of the hand rolled temaki like the spicy salmon, the deep fried shrimp with mayo or the California, the volcano roll, teppanyaki tenderloin.
