Shimla offers some of the best stay experiences to be had in the hills. Quite
a few hotels here are housed in heritage buildings. Apart from these, there are
plenty of hotels offering a wide range of accommodation, from dormitories to
luxury suites.

Woodville Palace was once the home of the Maharaja of Jubbal and is another
extraordinary survival. The porte cochere of the building is hung with wisteria
and flanked by a pair of old cannons.

Tariff: INR 6,500-15,000,

Inside, as liveried (but barefoot) waiters bring you a glass of whiskey, you sit and
take in the clash of different worlds in the dècor around you. Above the doorway, the sightless eyes of stuffed tigers stare down from their plinths; below is a signed daguerreotype of Queen Victoria.

But on the opposite wall, beside the fireplace, lies the debris of a rather different side of a maharajah’s Shimla season: “To Princess Brinda, with our sincere good wishes.” The picture is of Laurel and Hardy.

It was from humble beginnings as a front desk clerk at the Oberoi Group’s The Cecil, that MS Oberoi rose to build a group of luxury hotels.

The Oberoi Group also has The Clarks Oberoi here. Both are elegant colonial style properties on the Mall.

to visitors in 1976.

Springfields is another lovely option in the quiet recesses of Chhota Shimla.

A cheaper heritage option is Madan Kunj, once the summer residence of
the governor of Burma. Besides these heritage hotels, there are also other hotels in Shimla which you could take a look at.

HPTDC also has a heritage option in Hotel Peterhoff the home of seven viceroys and later the venue of Nathuram Godse’s trial for the murder of Mahatma Gandhi.
