The history behind its etymology goes such that the King of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy in 1892. The place where he eloped with her--the confluence of the Mall and the Ridge, came to be known as Scandal Point. He was banished from entering Shimla, so in retaliation, he made a new summer capital for himself in Chail!
