The inviting stretch of smooth roads, the thin beam of clouds enveloping the city sky, chatty fellow travellers and the enticing thoughts of sarso ka saag and makki ki roti! The journey towards Jalandhar is full of little surprises. Whether you travel by train, bus or decide to fly down, each has its own set of fun. Which one will you pick?

  • Rail

It’s fun travelling to Jalandhar by train! There are direct trains from Kolkata, Nagpur, Mumbai and Puri. If you are travelling from Delhi. You can take the Shatabdi from Delhi to Amritsar. It runs twice a day, so you won’t have to struggle with tickets. There are also trains that run at night.

The Deluxe Express connects Jalandhar to Mumbai, the Shatabdi to Amritsar is via Jalandhar, Howrah Mail connects Kolkata and Jalandhar and Utkal Express is what you can take to get to Puri.

There is no dearth of trains but to get a seat of your choice, say window set for a spectacular view, you’ll need to book in advance. Moreover, if you are travelling in a group or with family, booking in advance will help you get seats together.

There are two railway stations, one at Jalandhar City and another at Jalandhar Cant. Once at the station, you can pick an auto, cycle rickshaw or a taxi to get to your hotel.

  • Road

Most of North India is connected to Jalandhar by road. If you are travelling from other parts of the country, then you’ll need to get to Delhi first. From Delhi you have the option of AC and non AC buses which are either state run or private ones. Saheed Bhagat Singh Interstate Bus Terminal near Satluj Chowk is where most buses stop. Call +91-81-2223755, +91-92161-11555 for enquiry. There is a taxi stand right around the bus stand.

It will take you about 6.5 to 7 hours to reach Jalandhar from Delhi. A Tata Indica (AC) would cost INR 8 per km and a Tata Innova would cost INR 11 per km. Before you start your journey, talk to the driver/cab dealer about the extra expenses as well. To take care of the little hunger pangs the road towards Jalandhar is lined with dhabas.

Note that currently the highway towards Jalandhar is not in the best of conditions as various bridges are being constructed from Panipat. If you are driving be prepared for bumpy roads and jams. This is a temporary phase and the road should recover soon.

  • Air

Although Jalandhar doesn’t have an airport of its own, there is one at Amritsar that you could opt for. The Raja Sansi Airport at Amritsar is at 11 km from the city centre. Both domestic and international flights operate from here. Most carriers connect Mumbai, Kolkota and Bangalore, to name a few, to Jalandhar. The direct flights from all of these (except the ones from Delhi) can take anything between 6-10 hours. Pick a break journey at Delhi instead. Most of these destinations will take a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 4 hours to Delhi. Then from Delhi to Amritsar would take about an hour and a half. Plan smartly and save time. You can easily take a cab from the airport to your hotel.

Travel by train or fly down for a comfortable journey. From Amritsar airport to Jalandhar city will take you more than an one and a half hour. Plan your travel so that you aren’t too tired to enjoy the city.
