Though it is the destination that beckons us, the journey itself is a different experience. Be it through the clouds or through the picturesque greenery on the sides of the rails and roads, every route has its own story to tell. To begin the experience, three ways are listed below:

  • By Air

Pressed for time, yet you somehow made the plan? Treasure your time for sightseeing, trekking and other activities by opting to fly. As a bonus for your limited time, you will be treated to snow-topped peaks and green meadows that seem to proclaim the beauty of the place. The nearest airport to this town is Jolly Grant Airport, which is 30 km from Dehradun, the capital city. Major airlines like Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Indian Airlines fly from Delhi to this city. From the airport, Dehradun is around 26 km and can be reached in less than 30 minutes. After you reach Dehradun, you have to travel 190 km to finally reach Uttarkashi either by bus or cabs.

  • By train

The nearest railway head to Uttarkashi is Rishikesh, which is at a distance of 143 km from the destination. You can also choose to travel to Haridwar, which is less than 20 km from Rishikesh. Both of these stations are connected to all the major railway stations of the country, including, Delhi, Mumbai and Dehradun and will cost you around INR 150 to INR 800 depending on the city you are boarding from and the facility you avail. From here, you have to travel by road to reach Uttarkashi.

  • By road

From the nearest railway station or the airport, buses ply frequently and is a convenient and economical way to travel. If you are taking it from Rishikesh or Haridwar, fare will range from INR 100 to INR 110. You can also choose to take a bus from Dehradun which will take more than 5 hours. If public buses are not your thing, you can hire a cab and drive to Uttarkashi from any of the nearby destination. Though travelling by bus or taxi can be tiresome if the distance is not that short, the hillside roads, the trees on the side, the gorge down below, misty and cloudy from the road, the anticipation of a destination long awaited, can only be caught in your memory if you take the road.

These routes are dependent on your time, budget and energy. But in the end, it’s all about the kind of experience you want to start with. It will be a prologue to the wonders of Uttarkashi that you find so hard to resist.
