If walking is your hobby and you don’t get tired too easily on rough, natural terrains, then Matheran is one destination you will love from the core of your heart. Imagine walking in the wilderness, feeling the cool breeze and not having to worry about your day to day hassles. Well, all this and much more lies in store for you when you go knocking on the welcoming doors of Matheran.

Since, Matheran is an environment-friendly town, recognised so officially by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India, usage of vehicles is banned in this town. Dasturi Point, located about 11 km from Matheran is the farthest you can get your vehicles to. You must leave your vehicles or whatever mode of transport you are using here and then walk further in the town. From the eastern side is the town Neeral, from where you can trek up to the town. Also, beginners can opt for an easier route from a village known as Dudhoni. Inside the city, you will find signboards to guide you around this small hill station. You can even seek assistance from the locals who are very helpful and obliging. Just keep in mind to put in a good pair of shoes (preferably trekking shoes) to traverse the terrains of Matheran.

In case you cannot walk too much, another option for you is a pony or a tonga. Also available are man-pulled rickshaws which are very cheap and the rickshaw-puller will also double up as a guide.

So, gear up for an adventurous trip to all places to visit in Matheran.
