Getting around the city is very convenient due to the availability of cheap and easily accessible transport. Just read on to know more about the options.

  • Bus
Both ordinary and luxury buses ply within the city that cover all the major tourist as well as residential destinations. Volvo buses are available to major tourist attractions near Mysore including Chamundi Hills, KRS-Brindavan Garden, Zoo and Infosys. The fare varies according to the distance travelled but is usually between INR 2 to INR 10.

  • Taxi/Cabs
These are probably the best way to travel within the city, as they not only let you tour the city but also visit nearby places like Srirangapatna. There are, however, no regular taxi services to travel within the city, but, one can book a taxi from any travel agent and travel within the city or to nearby locations. Taxis are both comfortable and convenient and charge around INR 9 to INR 10 per kilometre.

  • Auto-rickshaw
Autos here do have meters but refuse to go according to it, especially at the railway and bus stations. You could either opt for a pre-paid auto-rickshaw or settle the price before you hop in. You will need to haggle for the fare to get a good deal or take the help from the traffic police to negotiate with the auto driver. If the autos do go by meter then the charges are INR 11 per kilometre.

  • Tonga
These horse-driven carriages are the most popular method of travel for locals around the city. They are easily available, as much as that they can be hailed off the road. They do provide you with a unique experience, however, they are useful only for short distances and are not very comfortable. They are extremely cheap mode of transportation within the city and their fares are negotiable.

Every travel option has both pros and cons. So, make an informed decision to have a great experience while travelling in Mysore.
