One of the most unique temple festivals in Kerala, Attuvela Mahotsavam involves playful celebrations with water as opposed to the religious festivals which can be a bit rigid in their customs and rituals. Celebrated in the Vaikom Village in Kottayam, the festival is dedicated to Elankavu Bhagavathy Goddess, who is the presiding deity of the temple which is the centre of these celebrations.

The rituals associated with this festival involve a procession of canoes and colourful replicas of the temple of the river, making for a complete visual treat. The procession is accompanied by devotees who walk by the river banks playing traditional temple percussion instruments. It is said that these celebrations are in honour of Goddess of Kodungalloor, who comes visiting her sister, Elankavu Bhagavathy Goddess.

Here is a video of the Attuvela Mahotsavam:

This year, the Attuvela Mahotsavam will be celebrated between 11th and 13th April.
