How is Dussehra celebrated in Mysore?

Mysore is famous for its Dussehra, a festival which is devoted to the presiding deity of the city — Goddess Chamundeshwari. It is celebrated sometime in September or October every year, and sees a huge outpouring of humanity from Mysore itself and from several neighbouring villages and towns. The 10-day-long festivities are spread out across several locations in the city. Scores of cultural programmes are held at many venues: Mysore Palace, Jaganmohan Palace, Town Hall, Kalamandira, Veena Shesanna Bhavana, Rangayana, some of the popular attractions in Mysore.

A procession, called the Jambu Savari and which begins again from the Mysore Palace grounds, is the culmination of the Dussehra Festival and is its most important event. Amidst sounds of cannon fire, waves of dance groups, music bands, decorated elephants, horses, camels, vintage cars and colourful tableaux move out from the palace walls on to Mysore’s streets, followed by the diminutive idol of the goddess Chamundeshwari — the biggest, the most significant presence in the Dussehra. The grand pageant moves through Bengaluru at a snail’s pace and takes more than 3 hrs to cover the 4 and 1/2 km to the Banni Mantap grounds.
