How is the nightlife in Kovalam?

Being an internationally renowned beach, Kovalam has often been compared to Goa. So it follows that like Goa, it would have a rocking nightlife, right? Wrong! What you have to remember is that Kerala is a pretty conservative state, so there are bound to be more restrictions here.

  • Lights out at 12!
You’ll find that though the beaches are littered with small bars and restaurants, almost all of them close by 11pm, and only a few daring ones keep their shop open till 12. Even the vendors selling shining yo-yos or other trinkets, wrap up their day’s work to head back home. So basically, once you arrive at the beach to begin your adventures under the starlit sky, you’ll see all the lights surrounding the beach gradually flickering off, till you are alone on the beach in the dark.
  • Moonlit walks
To some of you this must be sounding extremely appealing, especially if you happen to be one of the two people making up a romantic pair. After all, what could be more romantic than taking a moonlit walk (for your sake, we hope there’s a moon to begin with) on a temporary secluded beach? Ok, so maybe you can think of better things, but that’s beside the point. What we are trying to say is that the beach at night takes an almost magical otherworldly quality. The moonlight turns the sands to glittering fairy dust and the ocean into a shimmering molten silver. The dark silhouettes of the tall coconut trees stand guard over this entire vista, swaying and dancing to the song of the waves, the soft notes carried in by a gentle breeze. On a clear starry night the scene looks even more breathtaking.
  • Seaside Restaurants and Bars
For those who were looking forward to some partying, there’s no reason to be bummed out. Though it’s not going to be a wild affair, but still there are many other interesting ways to spend the nights here. The bars and restaurants lined along the beach, apart from providing drinks and appetisers, are also a great place for people watching. Go for the rooftop or terrace options. Get your drink and simply hang around with your friends, or chat with the other tourists. Always carry some mosquito repellent and a torch in the night. Here, you can check out the list of restaurants in Kovalam.
  • Cultural activities
Many hotels and resorts organise evening cultural activities like Kathakali performances, live music shows, Kalari - the Keralite martial arts form, and many more. There are usually flyers posted around the resort property, so you would never miss it. If you are lucky, you might even get to watch some spectacular fireworks which usually begin at the end of the cultural programmes.
  • Quiet evenings
An evening spent at an Ayurvedic spa centre will go a long way in easing away your tensions and worries. If you don’t feel like venturing out, this might be an excellent time to catch up on some reading, or order some room service and watch random movies back to back all night.

So choose your own version of a relaxed and enjoyable night time activity. After all, nobody does ‘relaxed’ better than Kovalam.
