Classified amongst the best Temple Carvings in India and top places to visit in Mumbai, Elephanta Caves are home to some breathtaking artwork.

To reach Elephanta Caves, you first need to reach Gateway of India. Once here, purchase tickets for the ferry to Elephant Island from the MTDC counter near the entrance of Gateway of India. Around the Gateway, you are likely to find people shouting ‘ELEPHANTAAAA’ so it won’t be much of a problem getting your hands on ferry tickets which should cost you INR 120 per person for the hour long ride. On purchasing the ticket, you will directed to the place from where you need to board the ferry. Typically every 30 minutes, a ferry leaves for Elephant Island.

If you want to sit on the deck once on the ferry, you will need to pay an extra INR 10 per person. The seats on the top provide better views and are a little less noisier as well. Click lots of pictures on the ride!

Once you reach the island, the caves are still a good 1 km away. You can either walk the distance, or take a toy train that connects the caves and jetty for INR 10 per person.

You will need to climb another 100 steps to finally get to the cave after you step off the train. Atop these stairs, you will find the ticket counter to the Elephanta Caves (INR 10 per person).

Few things that are good to know:

Ferries start leaving from Gateway of India at 9 AM and the last ferry leaves at 2:30 PM.
For returning, the first ferry leaves from the island at 12 noon and the last one at 5:30 PM.
A ferry leaves both jetties every 30 minutes.
Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays.
