While Gurudongmar Lake is the sight of a lifetime, it is also one exclusive view, as getting to the place is one MIGHTY task. First, lets discuss a few logistics.

To travel to North Sikkim, one needs a prior permit which can be arranged at Gangtok. The processing time is about 2 days, so plan your trip accordingly. Also, it is a must to travel with a tour organiser when heading to the northern terrains of the state, don't try to do this tour independently.

Once all this is arranged, you need to gear up for your journey. From Gangtok, one makes his way to Lachen via Mangan and Chungthang. After a one night stay in Lachen, the journey continues to Gurdongmar Lake.

Your journey to the Lake from Lachen starts early morning. You make your journey up the barren hills amidst scenic views which promise to stay with you for a lifetime. There is one stop along the way, at Thangu Village. You can have some tea and maggi here. Woollen socks, boots and jackets are available here, and it is a good idea to rent some if you aren't carrying them already.

The vehicle goes right upto the lake, so there is little or no trek you will be required to make to visit the place. As soon as you get off the vehicle, you will be greeted by breathtaking views  of rugged mountains and emerald blue waters of the gorgeous and serene Gurudongmar Lake.

Here are a few tips you should keep in mind for the trip:

1. A monkey cap, sunglasses and boots are a must for this trip. The cold is biting and you might just need to cover even your cheeks to prevent them from freezing.

2. The best time to visit the Gurudongmar Lake is from March to June and from November to December.

3. While it is a pleasing sight, the lake view comes at a physical cost. You need to be mentally prepared and physically fit to be able to deal with the low levels of oxygen and extreme temperatures when visiting the place.

4. Carry the best and the thickest of your woollens, don't underestimate how cold the place can be.

5. It is best to hire a 4X4 vehicle when heading to the lake.

6. Carry lots of chocolates for quick energy refills.  Lack of oxygen is bound to drain you.

The trip cost depends on your choice of accommodation in Lachen. Outside of the hotel tariff, the trip to Gurudongmar and back to Gangtok should cost about 3.5 k per person. This could be lesser if you opt for a bus from Gangtok to Lachen.

Hope this helps!
